Pipeline Strainers Stainless Steel

Benefits of Valve Strainer

Particle removal. The primary purpose of a valve strainer is to remove solid particles from the fluid stream like debris, sediment, rust, scale, or other contaminants. By capturing these particles, the valve strainer helps protect downstream equipment from damage or blockage, ensuring their reliable and efficient operation.

Cost-effective. Valve strainers provide a cost-effective solution for basic filtration needs. They are relatively simple in design and construction compared to more complex filtration systems. Valve strainers are often used when the particle load is low enough to anticipate infrequent cleaning needs.

Easy installation and maintenance. Valve strainers are easy to install in a pipeline since they generally require a straight section of pipe with sufficient clearance for the strainer body. They can even be assembled vertically, unlike many other filter designs. Maintenance involves flushing out the filter and the chamber that collects debris as needed.

Versatility. Valve strainers can be used in a wide range of applications and industries. They can even be used for steam, though the vendor or manufacturer needs to know this in advance so the appropriate filters, fittings, and housings to fit the task will be provided.

Material of Valve Strainer

Cast iron

A low-cost material with good corrosion resistance. Suitable for low to medium-pressure water, oil, and gas applications.

Stainless steel

Provides excellent corrosion resistance and is suitable for high-temperature and pressure applications. Useful for corrosive fluids, chemical media, and steam.

Carbon steel

A strong and durable material that provides good resistance to media corrosion and erosion. Suitable for a wide range of high-pressure and temperature fluid applications.

Bronze

A corrosion-resistant material with good surface strength and durability. Vital for alkaline fluid applications, where fluids like saltwater can expedite valve strainer corrosion.

Pvc

Polyvinyl chloride. A lightweight, corrosion-resistant material suitable for manufacturing valve strainers for low-pressure applications. Also beneficial for maintaining the cleanliness of mild chemicals.

Working Principles Of A Valve Strainer

Valve strainers are named for their y-shaped design. They have a body that houses a specially designed mesh screen that filters service fluids. Other strainers use wedged wire elements or perforated metal to filter particulates. The screening element has small openings that allow clean fluids to pass through.

Fluid enters the valve strainer through the inlet port, flowing under pressure past the screening element. As the fluid flows past the perforated metal, the mesh traps any particles, debris, suspended solids, and other foreign matter that is larger than the screening openings. Clean fluid exits the valve strainer through the outlet port, which is connected to adjacent pipelines.

The valve strainer traps all debris and unwanted matter within its body. This debris can easily be removed by opening the strainer cap. This allows you to clean the valve strainer and replace damaged or worn-out screens. Some valve strainers have blowout kits for removing contaminants faster without disassembling the entire unit. The blowout kit is also called a blowdown connection.

Valve strainers are essential for any fluid application where fluid cleanliness is critical. The cleanliness of service fluids affects the reliability and durability of mechanical systems in a piping system.Valve strainers can protect sensitive elements like diaphragm and solenoid valves. Debris blocks ports of a solenoid valve and prevents diaphragm valves from full seating, causing minute leakages around them.

FAQ

Q: How does a strainer valve work?

A: As liquid flows through the valve strainer, the screen of the strainer obstructs the flow and collects the debris from the liquid before allowing the process to continue. This obstruction causes the pressure of the liquid to drop, which is commonly referred to as pressure drop in the strainer.

Q: How often should valve strainers be cleaned?

A: If you have a valve strainer on your irrigation system, it is a good idea to clean them once a quarter or once a month in order to keep your sprinkler system working properly.

Q: What is the lifespan of a strainer?

A: The initial life expectancy of the strainers was 2-3 years before they came out of service for maintenance.

Q: Do strainers go before or after backflow?

A: By installing a strainer upstream of backflow prevention device or assembly, the mesh filter in the strainer will catch debris before entering the backflow prevention device or assembly.

Q: What is the difference between a strainer and a Y strainer?

A: Y Strainer: Y strainers are effective in capturing larger particles but may have limitations in retaining smaller particles compared to basket strainers. Basket Strainer: Basket strainers, with their larger surface area, are capable of capturing a broader range of particle sizes, including smaller particles.
