Ball Valve

What Is Ball Valve?

A ball valve is a shut off valve that controls the flow of a liquid or gas by means of a rotary ball having a bore. By rotating the ball a quarter turn (90 degrees) around its axis, the medium can flow through or is blocked. They are characterized by a long service life and provide a reliable sealing over the life span, even when the valve is not in use for a long time. Ball valves are more resistant against contaminated media than most other types of valves.

Advantages of Ball Valve

High efficiency
Due to the size of the opening in the ball, ball valves are considered high recovery valves since they have a low-pressure drop and high flow capacity. There is little turbulence or resistance to fluid flow when the valve is fully open.

Convenient usage
As a result of their simple quarter-turn (90-degree) operation, ball valves are efficient and convenient to use. As the valve is relatively lightweight and small, it is also easy to install and remove.

Low maintenance
Compared to other types of valves, ball valves are simple and require less maintenance. Because the ball valve stem rotates without axial movement, the packing seal on the valve stem does not easily wear or fail. Ball valves are easy to disassemble and repair, and worn parts can be easily replaced.

Cost-efficient
The cost of ball valves is affordable compared to more complex valve types. Also, as they have low maintenance needs, they're cheaper to maintain.implement in the long term.

Robust
Ball valves are among the most robust valve types because of their ability to withstand high pressures. Their wide range of materials enables them to be used in a variety of environments across a variety of industries.

Standard (threaded)
Standard ball valves consist of the housing, seats, ball and lever for ball rotation. They include valves with two, three and four ports which can be female or male threaded or a combination of those. Threaded valves are most common and come in many varieties: with approvals for specific media or applications, mini ball valves, angled ball valves, ISO-top ball valves, with an integrated strainer or a bleed point and the list goes on. They have a wide range of options and a large operating range for pressure and temperature.

Hydraulic
Hydraulic ball valves are specially designed for hydraulic and heating systems due to their high operating pressure rating and hydraulic and heating oil resistance. These valves are made of either steel or stainless steel. Besides these materials, the seats also make hydraulic valves suitable for high operating pressure. The seats of these valves are made of polyoxymethylene (POM), which is suitable for high pressure and low temperature applications. The maximum operating pressure of hydraulic ball valves goes above 500 bar while the maximum temperature goes up to 80°C.

Flanged
Flanged ball valves are characterized by their connection type. The ports are connected to a piping system via flanges that are usually designed in accordance with a certain standard. These valves provide a high flow rate since they typically have a full-bore design. When choosing a flanged ball valve, besides the pressure rating, you also have to check the flange compression class which indicates the highest pressure this connection type can withstand. These ball valves are designed with two, three or four ports, they can be approved for specific media, have an ISO-top and everything else a standard quarter turn valve could have. They are typically made out of stainless steel, steel, or cast iron.

Vented
Vented ball valves look almost the same as the standard 2-way ball valves when it comes to their design. The main difference is that the outlet port vents to the environment in closed position. This is achieved by a small hole that is drilled in the ball and in the valve body. When the valve closes, the holes line up with the outlet port and release the pressure. This is especially useful in compressed air systems where depressurization provides a safer working environment. Intuitively these valves look like 2-way ball valves while in fact they are 3/2-way due to the small borehole for venting.

Forged ball valves
Forged ball valves are created by shaping the alloys and metals while they are still in their solid form. The metals and alloys are bent by heating or with industrial-sized tools that deliver compressive forces to bend the materials. Forged ball valves are better suited for industrial applications that require high temperatures, pressures, and other severe conditions. Materials like brass and stainless steel can be used to construct forged ball valves. During the manufacturing process, the metal (or alloy) is heated, compressed, bent, and shaped according to the ball valve design using a die forging machine.

Utilizing a Ball Valve in Conjunction with Your Water Tank

1. Filling and emptying the water tank

One of the primary uses of a ball valve in this setup is to regulate the flow of water into and out of the water tank. When you need to fill the tank with water from an external source, simply open the ball valve by turning the handle or actuator. This allows water to enter the tank, and you can monitor the filling process as needed.

Conversely, when it's time to empty the tank, perhaps for maintenance or to supply water to various outlets, you can close the ball valve to stop the inflow and open it again to release the water. The quick on/off operation of the ball valve ensures efficient control without any delay.

2. Controlling water pressure

In some instances, you might want to control the water pressure from the tank to match the requirements of your specific application. A ball valve placed downstream of the pump can be adjusted to regulate the flow rate, which, in turn, affects the water pressure.

By partially closing the ball valve, you reduce the flow, and consequently, the pressure increases. Conversely, opening the valve wider allows more water to pass through, resulting in reduced pressure. This simple adjustment can be crucial for applications where maintaining a consistent water pressure is essential.

3. System isolation

A ball valve is also useful for isolating the water tank and rainwater pump from the rest of the system. For instance, if you need to conduct maintenance on the pump or replace the tank, closing the ball valve will halt the water flow, preventing any water from entering or leaving the system during the maintenance process.

This isolation feature is especially valuable as it eliminates the need to shut off the entire water supply, enabling you to work on the specific components without disrupting the overall water distribution.

4. Emergency shut-off

In the event of an emergency, such as a sudden leak or a malfunctioning pump, having a ball valve in place allows for a swift shut-off of water flow. The quick and reliable on/off operation ensures immediate response to mitigate potential damage or hazards.

5. Winterizing the system

In regions where freezing temperatures are a concern, winterizing the water tank and pump becomes crucial. By closing the ball valve and draining the water from the system, you can prevent water from freezing and causing damage to pipes and components.

Components of Ball Valve

Valve body

The valve body, typically made from materials like stainless steel, brass, or cast iron, serves as the primary framework that holds all the components together. It contains ports for fluid entry and exit and encases the ball and other internal parts securely.

Ball

The heart of the ball valve is the spherical ball, usually made from materials like chrome-plated brass, stainless steel, or pvc. The ball features a hole (bore) through its center, which allows or obstructs fluid flow when aligned or rotated perpendicular to the pipeline.

Valve stem

The valve stem connects the ball to the external actuator or handle. It acts as a pivotal link, facilitating the movement of the ball within the valve body.

Seats and seals

To ensure a tight seal and prevent leakage, ball valves employ seats and seals around the ball's surface. The materials used for these components depend on the fluid being handled and the temperature and pressure conditions.

Actuator

The actuator serves as the external control mechanism for the ball valve. It can be in the form of a lever, handwheel, pneumatic actuator, or electric motor, allowing easy manipulation of the ball's position.

End connections

Ball valves come with various end connections to suit different applications. Common types include threaded, flanged, or welded ends. The bonnet is the part of the body that contains the stem and packing.

Material of Ball Valve

Brass
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc that can be distinguished by its dull yellowish to reddish color, depending on the amount of zinc. It is the most common material for ball valves. Brass is a tough, strong, and durable metal that can withstand high temperatures and pressures. The copper in brass alloy has antimicrobial properties that inhibit the growth and reproduction of microbes on its surface. Brass has good chemical, corrosion, and biofouling resistance. It is inert to most acids, alkalis, and bases, except for solutions with high chlorine content. Chlorine can cause dezincification, a reaction where chloride ions strip away zinc from the alloy, causing a porous structure. Dezincification can drastically reduce the strength of the material.

Stainless steel
Stainless steel is a type of steel that contains higher chromium content and some amounts of nickel. The chromium content of stainless steel makes it acquire a superior corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is known for its excellent strength, toughness, and durability. It also retains its strength in high temperatures and pressures.

Polyvinyl chloride PVC)
PVC is a tough, rigid and durable plastic material. Compared to brass and stainless-steel alloys, they generally have lower strength but they are discount. They are resistant to corrosion and most acids, bases, and salt solutions.

PVC ball valve
Polypropylene ball valve (PP)
Pp is a tough, durable, lightweight, and flexible thermoplastic made from propylene monomer. It offers good resistance to most acids and bases, but has selective compatibility with organic substances and solvents. Its chemical resistance decreases with increasing temperatures. The maximum operating temperature of pp is 82°c. Pp ball valves are suitable for regulating the flow of fluids with a wide range of viscosity. They are used as materials for ball valves in the manufacturing of sugar, fertilizers, chemicals, paper, and others.

Polypropylene ball valve
Glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene ball valve (GFPP)
In gfpps, glass fibers are reinforced to polypropylene to increase its dimensional stability, rigidity, and chemical resistance, and to reduce the pp's coefficient of thermal expansion. Its heat deflection temperature is increased up to 1500c for a 40% GFDD at 264 psi. Reinforcement of glass fibers in pp increases cost-efficiency and makes it operate in more harsher and heavy-duty applications.

Polyvinylidene difluoride ball valve (PVDF)
PVDF is a high purity, durable, thermoplastic fluoropolymer with high molecular weight. It is synthesized from gaseous vinylidene fluoride monomer by a free-radical polymerization process. It is also resistant to abrasion.

Polyethylene (PE)
PE is a durable, flexible, lightweight, and the most abundant thermoplastic. PE is compatible with most compounds, including strong acids and bases, and to some organic compounds including oils and alcohols. Its increasing crystallinity and density makes it more chemical resistant. PE ball valves are used in handling fluids in many manufacturing processes, as well as in water purification and wastewater treatment. The maximum operating temperature of PVDF is around 60°c.

How to Maintain Ball Valve

Regular inspections
Just as a doctor would regularly check a patient's vital signs, inspect your ball valves regularly for any leaks and monitor operational performance. If a valve is leaking or not operating at its peak, it may be a sign that it requires maintenance or replacement.

Lubrication
Some ball valves may benefit from regular lubrication to ensure smooth operation. Always adhere to the manufacturer's instructions regarding the type and frequency of lubrication.

Seal replacement
As mentioned earlier, seals are often the first component to fail in a ball valve. With a serviceable three-piece design, these can be replaced without having to remove the entire valve from the system, thus prolonging the valve's life.

Clearing obstructions
Just like how a blocked artery can cause health problems, a valve obstructed by debris or foreign particles can hamper flow and affect performance. Regular inspections and cleaning can help keep the valve free from obstructions.

Follow the manufacturer's specifications
Each valve comes with a unique set of preventive maintenance instructions from the manufacturer. It's important to follow these specifications to ensure the valve's optimal performance and longevity.

Process of Ball Valve

A ball valve is a device that allows a fluid to flow in one direction. These valves have two ports: one for media input and one for media output. Since they only allow the material to flow in one direction, they are also known as check valves. A ball valve is a type of shut-off valve that uses a ball with a hollow section to regulate the flow of liquids or gases. By rotating the ball a quarter of a turn around its axis, the medium can flow through or be blocked. They have a long service life and provide an effective seal even when the valve is not in use, making them one of the most durable pipeline valves you can use. A wrench or lever that is manually twisted by the user is the easiest way to operate a ball valve. To open and close the valve, apply torque to the lever arm and move it 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise. When the lever arm is parallel to the pipe, it means that the valve is open. However, when the lever arm is perpendicular to the pipe, the valve closes. The flow rate of the system is used to control the check valve. Once the system reaches the opening pressure or minimum upstream pressure required for the valve to work, the disc rises and allows the fluid to pass through. If the fluid pressure drops or the flow direction begins to reverse, the disc will automatically stop the valve to stop the fluid from passing through. As a result, backflow is reduced. Applications that require a ball valve are the most important limiting factor. For low-pressure, low-temperature applications, a PVC ball valve may be sufficient, but a stainless steel ball valve may be required to block the flow of hot or high-pressure material. Not all ball valves need to be manually actuated. Some valves, such as motorized ball valves, open and close as current passes through.

FAQ

Q: When is a ball valve open?

A: A ball valve is open when the handle is in-line with the pipe and closed when the valve is perpendicular to the pipe. They only need to be rotated 90 degrees.

Q: What is a ball valve?

A: A ball valve is a shutoff valve that controls the flow of a liquid or gas by means of a rotary ball having a bore. They can be operated by a handle or automated with an electric or pneumatic actuator.

Q: How to install a ball valve?

A: Screw on the input and output of the ball valve into your threaded assembly. Ensure the handle is installed correctly (parallel is open) before installation.

Q: Can ball valves fail?

A: Yes, a ball valve can fail. Common failure types are a damaged seal (valve wont seal 100%) or debris entering the valve (valve wont move).

Q: What can a ball valve be used for?

A: A ball valve can be used both as a shut-off valve and as a control valve for both liquids & gases. In the case of a control valve, the bore is usually made in a v-shape.

Q: What is a forged valve?

A: Forged ball valves are created by shaping the alloys and metals in their solid form. The metals and alloys are bent by heating or with industrial-sized tools that deliver compressive forces to bend the materials.

Q: How do I choose a ball valve?

A: More often than not, the rate of flow required through the ball valve is the first consideration. The larger the size of the bore, the better the flow rate so this is a good place to start, especially if you are specifying a new assembly which will include your ball valve.

Q: How do I know what size ball valve I need?

A: To do this, you'll need the following measurement: External measurement of the male thread on the fittings: Similarly, if the external diameter of the male thread is close to a particular size, you'll need a ball valve of the same size. A 2″ external diameter, for instance, would require a 2″ ball valve.

Q: How do I know which valve to use?

A: The right valve choice means matching the valve's size to expected flow through the system. Know the chemical compatibility requirements. The valve materials need to be compatible with the gases or liquids flowing through it. Plastic valves usually resist harsh or corrosive chemicals better than metal valves.

Q: How do you position a ball valve?

A: Ball valves may be installed in vertical or horizontal pipe runs, they are bi-directional therefore flow direction is not critical, however the best practice is to set up the valve handle to point in the direction of flow whenever possible.

Q: What is the proper way to install a ball valve?

A: Cut the pipe to the required length and keep the ends free from defects. Unscrew the nut and slide the valve onto the pipe. Insert the pipe into the valve fitting as far as the pipe stops. Slide the nut back onto the fitting and tighten it by hand until the pipe cannot rotate.

Q: What is the ball valve for?

A: Ball valves are used for both on/off and throttling service. Ball valves are similar to plug valves but use a ball-shaped seating element. They are quick-opening and require only a quarter-turn to open or close.

Q: Should ball valve be fully open?

A: Ball valves are normally meant to be either fully open or fully closed, and are very practical for closing or opening the flow line.

Q: How do you control a ball valve?

A: A ball valve is a type of quarter-turn valve with a hollow ball to control flow through it. A 90-degree turn of the valve will position the ball's hole in line with the flow direction, and the reverse will completely shut-off the valve in the closed position

Q: Why are ball valves directional?

A: Unidirectional ball valves allow liquid to flow in only one direction. Typically, the outside of the valve will be marked with an arrow showing the direction of flow. Inside the valve, there is only one seat.

Q: What is the rotation of the ball valve?

A: The 90 degree rotation is technically all that's required for the opening and closing of ball valves, but there are some applications where it's more desirable to have the full movement of the core. The ball valve is a notable industrial choice thanks to its reliable and air-tight sealing when in the closed position.

Q: Can a ball valve be backwards?

A: Essentially, it can be installed in any direction but any installation that is not the recommended usual way of installation may have effects on the way pressure is handled in the ball valve mechanism.

Q: Do ball valves reduce pressure?

A: So, can a ball valve reduce water pressure? Due to the fact that a ball valve should only be fully open or fully closed, it is not advisable to use a ball valve to control pressure. For this application, it's always best to use a pressure reducing valve, also known as a pressure regulator.

Q: How much pressure can a ball valve hold?

A: It is named for the ball inside the valve that rotates. They are used in many areas due to their ease of repair and ability to withstand pressure and temperature. Depending on what they are made of, ball valves can hold up to 10,000 pounds per square inch.

Q: Is it OK to leave ball valve half open?

A: The downside to this design is that it only has an open or closed position; leaving it half open can cause damage as the water can cause vibrations in the valve. Shut off valves are an essential part of the home. They need to be functional when you need them most.
