Types of Ball Valve




Standard (threaded)
Standard ball valves consist of the housing, seats, ball and lever for ball rotation. They include valves with two, three and four ports which can be female or male threaded or a combination of those. Threaded valves are most common and come in many varieties: with approvals for specific media or applications, mini ball valves, angled ball valves, ISO-top ball valves, with an integrated strainer or a bleed point and the list goes on. They have a wide range of options and a large operating range for pressure and temperature.
Hydraulic
Hydraulic ball valves are specially designed for hydraulic and heating systems due to their high operating pressure rating and hydraulic and heating oil resistance. These valves are made of either steel or stainless steel. Besides these materials, the seats also make hydraulic valves suitable for high operating pressure. The seats of these valves are made of polyoxymethylene (POM), which is suitable for high pressure and low temperature applications. The maximum operating pressure of hydraulic ball valves goes above 500 bar while the maximum temperature goes up to 80°C.
Flanged
Flanged ball valves are characterized by their connection type. The ports are connected to a piping system via flanges that are usually designed in accordance with a certain standard. These valves provide a high flow rate since they typically have a full-bore design. When choosing a flanged ball valve, besides the pressure rating, you also have to check the flange compression class which indicates the highest pressure this connection type can withstand. These ball valves are designed with two, three or four ports, they can be approved for specific media, have an ISO-top and everything else a standard quarter turn valve could have. They are typically made out of stainless steel, steel, or cast iron.
Vented
Vented ball valves look almost the same as the standard 2-way ball valves when it comes to their design. The main difference is that the outlet port vents to the environment in closed position. This is achieved by a small hole that is drilled in the ball and in the valve body. When the valve closes, the holes line up with the outlet port and release the pressure. This is especially useful in compressed air systems where depressurization provides a safer working environment. Intuitively these valves look like 2-way ball valves while in fact they are 3/2-way due to the small borehole for venting.
Forged ball valves
Forged ball valves are created by shaping the alloys and metals while they are still in their solid form. The metals and alloys are bent by heating or with industrial-sized tools that deliver compressive forces to bend the materials. Forged ball valves are better suited for industrial applications that require high temperatures, pressures, and other severe conditions. Materials like brass and stainless steel can be used to construct forged ball valves. During the manufacturing process, the metal (or alloy) is heated, compressed, bent, and shaped according to the ball valve design using a die forging machine.
Utilizing a Ball Valve in Conjunction with Your Water Tank
One of the primary uses of a ball valve in this setup is to regulate the flow of water into and out of the water tank. When you need to fill the tank with water from an external source, simply open the ball valve by turning the handle or actuator. This allows water to enter the tank, and you can monitor the filling process as needed.
Conversely, when it's time to empty the tank, perhaps for maintenance or to supply water to various outlets, you can close the ball valve to stop the inflow and open it again to release the water. The quick on/off operation of the ball valve ensures efficient control without any delay.
In some instances, you might want to control the water pressure from the tank to match the requirements of your specific application. A ball valve placed downstream of the pump can be adjusted to regulate the flow rate, which, in turn, affects the water pressure.
By partially closing the ball valve, you reduce the flow, and consequently, the pressure increases. This simple adjustment can be crucial for applications where maintaining a consistent water pressure is essential.
A ball valve is also useful for isolating the water tank and rainwater pump from the rest of the system. For instance, if you need to conduct maintenance on the pump or replace the tank, closing the ball valve will halt the water flow, preventing any water from entering or leaving the system during the maintenance process.
This isolation feature is especially valuable as it eliminates the need to shut off the entire water supply, enabling you to work on the specific components without disrupting the overall water distribution.
In the event of an emergency, such as a sudden leak or a malfunctioning pump, having a ball valve in place allows for a swift shut-off of water flow. The quick and reliable on/off operation ensures immediate response to mitigate potential damage or hazards.
In regions where freezing temperatures are a concern, winterizing the water tank and pump becomes crucial. By closing the ball valve and draining the water from the system, you can prevent water from freezing and causing damage to pipes and components.

Components of Ball Valve

Material of Ball Valve
Brass
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc that can be distinguished by its dull yellowish to reddish color, depending on the amount of zinc. It is the most common material for ball valves. Brass is a tough, strong, and durable metal that can withstand high temperatures and pressures. The copper in brass alloy has antimicrobial properties that inhibit the growth and reproduction of microbes on its surface. Brass has good chemical, corrosion, and biofouling resistance. It is inert to most acids, alkalis, and bases, except for solutions with high chlorine content. Chlorine can cause dezincification, a reaction where chloride ions strip away zinc from the alloy, causing a porous structure. Dezincification can drastically reduce the strength of the material.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel is a type of steel that contains higher chromium content and some amounts of nickel. The chromium content of stainless steel makes it acquire a superior corrosion resistance. PVC ball valve
Polypropylene ball valve (PP)
Pp is a tough, durable, lightweight, and flexible thermoplastic made from propylene monomer. It offers good resistance to most acids and bases, but has selective compatibility with organic substances and solvents. Its chemical resistance decreases with increasing temperatures. The maximum operating temperature of pp is 82°c. Pp ball valves are suitable for regulating the flow of fluids with a wide range of viscosity. They are used as materials for ball valves in the manufacturing of sugar, fertilizers, chemicals, paper, and others.
Polypropylene ball valve
Glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene ball valve (GFPP)
In gfpps, glass fibers are reinforced to polypropylene to increase its dimensional stability, rigidity, and chemical resistance, and to reduce the pp's coefficient of thermal expansion. Its heat deflection temperature is increased up to 1500c for a 40% GFDD at 264 psi. Reinforcement of glass fibers in pp increases cost-efficiency and makes it operate in more harsher and heavy-duty applications.
Polyvinylidene difluoride ball valve (PVDF)
PVDF is a high purity, durable, thermoplastic fluoropolymer with high molecular weight. It is synthesized from gaseous vinylidene fluoride monomer by a free-radical polymerization process. It is also resistant to abrasion.
Polyethylene (PE)
PE is a durable, flexible, lightweight, and the most abundant thermoplastic. PE is compatible with most compounds, including strong acids and bases, and to some organic compounds including oils and alcohols. Its increasing crystallinity and density makes it more chemical resistant. PE ball valves are used in handling fluids in many manufacturing processes, as well as in water purification and wastewater treatment. The maximum operating temperature of PVDF is around 60°c.
Regular inspections

A ball valve is a type of shut-off valve that uses a ball with a hollow section to regulate the flow of liquids or gases. By rotating the ball a quarter of a turn around its axis, the medium can flow through or be blocked. A wrench or lever that is manually twisted by the user is the easiest way to operate a ball valve. Not all ball valves need to be manually actuated. Some valves, such as motorized ball valves, open and close as current passes through.
