Benefits of Stainless Steel Ball Valve

Ease of Use: They open and close quickly using minumal force with a simple 90 degree (quarter-turn) of the handle and require no tools for operation.

Quick Installation: They are quick and easy to install using simple threaded ends as a method of connecting in-line to an application.

Versatile: They are good for high pressure, high temperature and high flow making them suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

Durable: Their simple robust design provides resistance to general wear and tear ensuring a long service life of reliable use.

Reliable: They are designed for repeatable use of leak free service, that is to repeat their function of opening and closing flow in the same way for the life of the valve.

Non Rising Stem Valve Corrosion Protection

Cost Effective: They are the most cost effective of all the valves.

Low Maintenance: Since they are low maintanance and require little to no service, this results to additional long term cost savings.

No Lubrication required: The Teflon seats holding the ball function well in wet and dry situations.

Low Pressure Drop: They have a high flow capacity and low pressure drop due to the size of the bore in the ball. when fully open there is little to no resistance to the flow of fluid.

Compact: Smaller than other options like gate and butterfly valves.

Application of Stainless Steel Ball Valve

Petroleum Refining

The process of refining crude oil into usable outputs is a complicated one that we will not delve too far into today. However, it is a great example of a job that only stainless steal ball valves can do. Crude petroleum can contain water, carbon dioxide, sulfur, and all kinds of microorganisms. These make it a very corrosive substance. It will slowly break down metal over time, so you must get valves and pipes that will be able to withstand it for the longest amount of time. Stainless steel ball valves will hold up longer than other materials, so they are the obvious choice.

Seawater Environments

Some applications take place in or near seawater, such as desalination. Marine environments are corrosive and harmful to all types of materials, but because they involve water, they affect metals most of all. In these types of applications, many like to use plastic ball valves that may have better resistance to water and harsh chemicals than most metals. The problem with this is that plastic valves lack the ability to perform under high pressures and extreme temperatures. Stainless steel ball valves handle intense conditions with ease. And with the proper maintenance, a stainless ball valve can have a long lifespan around seawater.

Brewing Systems

Finally, we will take a quick look at brewing. Stainless steel ball valves are used in just about every brewery. Most commonly located on the kettle, stainless ball valves allow the user to control liquid flow during transfers. The reason stainless steel is necessary is it comes in direct contact with wort, the liquid extracted during the mashing process when brewing beer or whisky. This is a corrosive liquid substance that would wear down valves made of iron.

Components Of Stainless Steel Ball Valves

The Valve Body
Also referred to as the valve housing or shell, it contains all the inner components of the valve. Usually composed of a rigid metal, in this case Stainless Steel, it protects all the internal components and keeps them in the correct position and aligned for proper functioning. It also facilitated access for the external handle to connect with and rotate the internal ball, via the stem. The valve body comes in three assembly options: one-piece, two piece and three-piece designs.

The Rotary Ball
This is the part that gave the valve its name. It is a ball that has "flow path" known as a bore, through the center that allows the medium to flow through it. The ball is rotated by the stem, which either opens the flow when the bore is in-line with the pipe or closes the flow when the bore is perpendicular to the flow. There are two types of bore design: Full port and Reduced port.

The Stem

Also referred to as the shaft, it connects the external handle that rotates the inner ball. The Stem has washers and packing rings to ensure a tight seal and to prevent any leaks. The stem is rotated as the handle is turned, which in turn rotates the ball, opening and closing the flow.

The Seat

The Seat sits between the ball and the valve body and ensures a water tight seal. There are two seats that sit on either side of the ball and are usually composed of Teflon (PTFE).

The Handle

The handle is also often called the lever. it a standard ball valve it is the manual way used to turn the ball valve to the open or closed position.

FAQ

Q: How often should ball valves be replaced?

A: A ball valve's failure rate is typically between 0.2 and 10 failures per million hours, or once every 11 years. Ball valves have a life expectancy of around eight to ten years.

Q: Should ball valves be soldered open or closed?

A: Soldering a ball valve can be done in an open or closed position. But, soldering ball valves in the closed position are better because they're safe, and there is less chance of damaging any internal parts like seats and seals.

Q: What is the lifespan of a ball valve?

A: Many ball valve manufacturers provide an estimate of expected ball valve lifespan (usually eight to 10 years), and proper maintenance can certainly extend this range. However, ball valve lifespan can be influenced by a variety of other factors.

Q: What is the preventive maintenance for ball valves?

A: Build the following steps into your maintenance program.
Proper installation. Ball valves that are installed correctly have a much lower chance of needing repairs or replacement.
Regular cleanings.
Valve lubrication.
Routine inspections.
Scheduled plant shutdowns.

Q: Should the ball valve be the same size as pipe?

A: Measure the Inside Diameter (ID) of the pipe, this is the distance across the pipe's inner surface from one side to the other. Once you have identified the ID, choose a ball valve that is closest to that size. Ball valves are typically labeled in inches for the pipe they will fit, not the ball valves physical size.
